2005 ACEC Gold Award in Structural Systems
FOR THE I-87 NORTHBOUND BRIDGE OVER
I-287 EASTBOUND CONNECTOR
WSP SELLS received the 2005 ACEC Gold Award in Structural Systems for providing innovative design and construction support services for the new Route I-87 Northbound Bridge over the I-287 Eastbound Connector for the NYSDOT/NYSTA. At 82 meters, the I-87 Northbound Bridge is the longest single span structure constructed as part of the I-287/I-87 Interchange 8 project. To date, the longest single span bridge in the nation with high performance steel (HPS) welded plate girders, and one of the longest single span plate girder structures in the country. This $7.1 million structure was part of a total construction cost of $165 million for the Interchange 8 project.
HIGHLIGHTS
A tight design schedule (5 months).
A bridge structure clear spanning the roadway below (82 meters) with abutment skews of 60 and 65 degrees.
A design and construction procedure considering the girder plumbness and differential deflection of the girders with a placement sequence to mitigate the effects related to the considerations.
Quality Construction Support Services throughout the construction progress to ensure that critical design elements were implemented.
Implemented unique design techniques to warrant the contractor stay within the parameters of conventional methods and procedures (subsequently eliminating higher premium costs).
Key enhancements to the 2-lane roadway included the provision of full shoulders and a future lane to accommodate rehabilitation of the deck and traffic growth.
