2004 ACEC Gold Award in Structural Systems
FOR THE REHABILITATION OF THE I-287 BRIDGE
OVER ROUTE 119
WSP SELLS accepted the 2004 ACEC Gold Award in Structural Systems for our design of the I-287 over Route 119 in Westchester County, New York. This $19 million structure was part of a total construction cost of $165 million for the Interchange 8 project.
WSP SELLS unique design included the construction of a 68 meter long and 59.6 meter wide superstructure with no longitudinal expansion joints. The existing simple four-span bridge was replaced with a curved single span steel multi-box girder structure utilizing two-staged construction. By minimizing stages in the construction process, the project schedule was accelerated. This enabled the contractor to expeditiously construct the bridge, while maintaining east-west traffic flows along I-287 and along the heavily traveled Route 119, located beneath.
HIGHLIGHTS
An enhanced interchange with the Route 119 Bridge to carry 6 lanes of roadway, two Collector Distributor Roads, full shoulders and better clearance along Route 119.
A tight design schedule (5 months).
A 59.6 meter wide bridge deck without a longitudinal expansion joint to accommodate future roadway configurations and/or light rail application.
New footprint deliberately placed in front of the existing, in order to use the existing piles as temporary shoring.
Zero impact on existing utilities and/or overhead wires.
